Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
Treatment of Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
The sinus tarsi is a small bony canal that runs inside the ankle and, in particular, under the talus bone. It can be damaged due to overloading of the area, due to biomechanical alterations of the foot, causing inflammation of the synovial fluid that contains this channel. These patients are often athletes or people who have had a sprained ankle due to inversion of the foot on some occasion.
Symptoms and rehabilitation
Patients with this syndrome report mild pain, together with hypersensitivity in the external lateral malleolus, which makes it difficult for them to run. At the San Roman Chiropody Clinic we recommend rest and the application of ice to reduce pain and inflammation. The specialists at the San Roman Chiropody Clinic can also prescribe, if necessary, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In our centre we have an electrotherapy area with ultrasound, TENS and laser, which will help to reduce inflammation.
An important part of the treatment can be the mobilisation of the sub-talar joint, as well as the correction of any biomechanical alterations, with our custom-made orthopaedic insoles, under plaster moulds and made with state-of-the-art materials.
