Tips for foot care and the importance of proper footwear - Clínica San Román Alicante

Foot care tips

The feet are the fundamental support of the whole body, yet we tend to forget about them until they hurt. Foot pain is not something inevitable that has to be accepted with age: with a few simple habits you can prevent a lot of discomfort. At Clínica San Román we leave you our podiatrist’s advice to keep your feet healthy.

Daily foot care

Washing and hygiene

Warm water and neutral pH soap daily, without prolonged soaking.

Drying between fingers

Dry well, especially between the fingers, to avoid humidity and fungus.

Hydration

Apply moisturizing cream to prevent cracks, avoiding the area between the fingers.

General foot care and prevention habits - Clínica San Román Alicante

Do not cut corns and calluses on your own. Using razors or callicides without a prescription can lead to injury and infection, especially if you have diabetes or circulation problems. Professional chiropody is painless and much safer.

Nail care

Keep your nails trimmed straight across and do not press the sides: this prevents ingrown toenails. Use a suitable nail clipper and file the edges. Elderly people or those with difficulty reaching their feet, or with vision problems, should ask for help or go to a professional to avoid accidental cuts.

Keep your feet warm

In winter, keep your feet from getting too cold: cold reduces circulation and promotes discomfort. Wear wool socks or stockings and avoid tight nylon socks, which can compress and promote cramps. Lined, breathable footwear helps maintain an adequate temperature without accumulating moisture.

Choose healthy footwear

Footwear greatly influences foot health. As a general rule, look for:

  • Wide last in the toe area, without compression.
  • Firm heel counter to support the foot.
  • Flexible sole and moderate heel (avoid continuous use of high heel and narrow toe).
  • Breathable material and periodical renewal of sports footwear.

If you need it, custom insoles and silicone orthotics fit almost any type of shoe and help distribute loads better.

When to see a podiatrist?

Consult whenever there is persistent pain, a deformity, a wound that does not close, changes in color or temperature in the foot, or if you notice alterations when walking. Periodic examination is especially important in people with diabetes, circulation problems or the elderly.

Attention if you have diabetes. Inspect your feet daily for redness, swelling, cracks or small sores, do not walk barefoot and go for preventive check-ups. The diabetic foot requires a multidisciplinary approach; at any sign of alarm, consult as soon as possible.

Frequently asked questions about foot care

How should I wash and dry my feet?

Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water and pH-neutral soap, without prolonged soaking. Dry them well, especially between the toes, to avoid moisture that favors fungus.

Can I cut corns or calluses at home?

It is not recommended. Cutting calluses with blades or using callicides without a prescription can cause wounds and infections, especially with diabetes or circulation problems. The safest thing to do is to see a podiatrist.

How often should I check and cut my nails?

Keep the nails trimmed straight across and do not press the sides to prevent ingrown toenails. Elderly people or those who have difficulty reaching their feet should ask for help or consult a professional.

Which footwear is healthier for your feet?

Choose shoes with a wide last, firm counter, flexible sole and moderate heel. Avoid narrow toes and high heels for continuous use, and renew athletic footwear periodically.

How should a person with diabetes care for his or her feet?

You should inspect your feet daily (redness, swelling, cracks or sores), moisturize the skin, do not walk barefoot and check periodically with your healthcare team. The diabetic foot requires a preventive and multidisciplinary approach.
