Metatarsal Surgery
Metatarsalgia, surgery and hammer treatment
At Clínica Podológica San Román we are experts in the best advanced techniques in minimally invasive surgery or percutaneous surgery to treat metatarsalgia.
Metatarsalgia is the name given to the sinking of the transverse arch or pain produced by metatarsal overload.
Metatarsalgia can be summarized as “pain in the anterior area of the foot”, coinciding with the metatarsal bones.
It may happen that not all metatarsals are placed in the plane of support with the same inclination and length.
An excess or defect in the inclination, or the sinking of the metatarsal of the foot, or the length of the same, can cause an alteration of the anterior transverse arch and of the metatarsal parabola, causing plantar hyperapposures and pains that make normal ambulation difficult.
The origins can be different from anatomical to biomechanical.
Some more detailed possible causes:
Biomechanics: Due to alterations in stepping, there is instability in the loads that causes greater suffering in the metatarsal area.
Foot deformities: Claw toes, pes cavus, even bunions or hammer toes are reasons for metatarsal pain.
Footwear: Inadequate footwear, especially the use of heels, which reinforce the weight in one point and alter the metatarsal-phalangeal joints.
Hard, inelastic or narrow shoes can also be the cause of the problem.
Dehydration: Not being well hydrated, you get loss of elasticity of the adipose tissue that acts as a shock absorber and located in the arch of the foot, which makes the metatarsal heads exposed to support, increasing the likelihood of pain and inflammation.
Systemic diseases: Such as diabetes which can lead to foot ulceration, infections may be associated with metatarsalgia or rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout.
