Swimming pools are the perfect place to cool off and have fun during the summer, but the more time we spend in them the more exposed we are to developing foot infections.
The heat and humidity of these recreational areas facilitate the growth and reproduction of fungi and certain viruses, such as athlete’s foot and other similar conditions.
This does not mean that you should avoid using them, but simply that you should take a series of precautions and pay more attention to the care of your feet to prevent any type of ailment.
How do foot infections occur?
Warm, moist places such as the edges of swimming pools, shower floors and stagnant water harbor certain types of fungi that spread their spores into the surrounding environment.
Transmission occurs when your skin comes into direct contact with the fungus or its spores. The pathogen looks for the best area to settle, which in the case of the feet can be under the nails or between the toes.
The foot infections The most common foot infections caused in this way are athlete’s foot, plantar papilloma and onychomycosis.
Wear proper footwear to prevent foot fungus
The first measure to be taken to prevent the spread of fungus is to fungi is to wear footwear when walking on wet or damp ground. Flip-flops and sandals are ideal because they provide comfort and are easy to remove when entering the pool.
Excessive sweating is also an important factor in the development of mycosis, so it is advisable to take frequent showers, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and wear cotton socks that allow the skin to perspire.
If you suffer from hyperhidrosis and practice outdoor sports with closed shoes, you should use talcum powder and deodorants before putting on your shoes.
Create a foot care routine to prevent foot infections
Foot infections are prevented on a daily basis. Every time you go to the swimming pool or practice a sport, wash your feet thoroughly to remove sweat, dirt and any pathogenic agent.
Then dry the sole, the instep and each of the toes very well using a clean dry towel. Remember that humidity is the ideal environment for the proliferation of fungi.
Apply a moisturizing cream and let the skin absorb it. Keeping your skin moisturized will help you avoid cracks and small cuts that can become infected.
Wash flip-flops and slippers regularly and use them again only when they are completely dry.
