Foot fungus and infections: How to prevent them when you go to the pool

Swimming pools are the perfect place to cool off and have fun during the summer, but the more time we spend in them the more exposed we are to developing foot infections.

The heat and humidity of these recreational areas facilitate the growth and reproduction of fungi and certain viruses, such as athlete’s foot and other similar conditions.

This does not mean that you should avoid using them, but simply that you should take a series of precautions and pay more attention to the care of your feet to prevent any type of ailment.

How do foot infections occur?

Warm, moist places such as the edges of swimming pools, shower floors and stagnant water harbor certain types of fungi that spread their spores into the surrounding environment.

Transmission occurs when your skin comes into direct contact with the fungus or its spores. The pathogen looks for the best area to settle, which in the case of the feet can be under the nails or between the toes.

Apply a moisturizing cream and let the skin absorb it. Keeping your skin moisturized will help you avoid cracks and small cuts that can become infected.

Wash flip-flops and slippers regularly and use them again only when they are completely dry.
