Calcaneal Spur

Foot spur, treatments and insoles

Heel spur or calcaneal spur is a calcification at the level of the heel bone that requires specific treatments and is caused as a consequence of excessive and continuous stretching of the plantar fascia.
It causes considerable pain in the heel of the foot that can be relieved by treatment or surgery.

It is the formation of a bony exostosis (bony growth on the surface of the bone) at the level of the insertion of the fascia, in the calcaneus as a consequence of a local stress maintained in the time.
The excess of weight or a very exaggerated architecture of the foot can accelerate the formation of this process.
It presents with severe pain when starting to walk in the morning or after a period of rest, which is relieved after a few moments.

The spur is not painful, but the injury it causes to the adjacent soft tissues is painful.

The spur is more frequent among people who have a very arched foot or who are overweight, although it can also appear among those who make violent movements with the foot. In addition, flat feet and Achilles tendon contractures also increase stress on the plantar fascia and can lead to heel spurs.

FOOT SPUR SOLUTION

At the San Roman Podiatric Clinic we initially propose a conservative treatment through the application of our custom-made orthopedic insoles and anti-inflammatories.
This treatment has shown excellent results in reducing inflammation and pain in the area, because the insoles redistribute all the weight of the body on the plantar surface, thus relaxing the musculo-tendinous structure of the foot.

When conservative treatment is not enough for the patient’s discomfort, in San Roman Podiatric Clinic we offer surgical treatment through outpatient surgery with minimal incision techniques.
Through an incision of a few millimeters the spur is removed and we relax the plantar fascia, allowing immediate ambulation to our patients.
In general, this procedure has a post-operative period of about 3 weeks.
