Clínica San Román has been a specialist since 1979 in minimally invasive or percutaneous foot surgery, among other common treatments in a podiatric clinic.

But what is minimally invasive or percutaneous foot surgery?

It is a method that allows performing different surgical techniques through incisions of a few millimeters with minimal injury to the tissues and thus a clearly faster recovery is achieved, with less risk of complications.
In order to perform this technique it is necessary to use special equipment and a fluoroscope.

Where should such foot surgery be performed?

Clearly in an operating room approved to perform these techniques, which we have in the San Roman Podiatric Clinic.
We have expert surgeons in these techniques with an exhaustive control of hygiene and sterility measures.

When can you return to work, driving or exercise?

In the postoperative stage the patient can perform work or social activities that are not a major effort.
The patient’s return to work will depend on the intensity of the work.

Driving is not allowed while the foot is in the special bandage.

Exercise can be started between 2 and 3 weeks, avoiding especially exercises focused on jumping or rebounding, where you will have to wait about 8 weeks.

What type of anesthesia is used for this type of surgery?

Local anesthesia.
Depending on the type of surgery, the anesthesia can be on the whole foot or exclusively on the toes to be operated on.
Using this technique greatly reduces possible complications due to anesthesia.

What is the post-operative period like?

As it is a totally ambulatory surgery.
A special bandage is applied and a post-surgical shoe is put on to protect the foot in the best way, allowing the patient to go out without help.
In addition, special plastic covers are given to the patient so that he/she can take a shower without the possibility of getting the bandage wet.

The post-operative stage the patient can come to the office as many times as necessary.
Under normal conditions, the bandage is changed every 2 weeks until the patient is discharged after 40 days.
Subsequently, the foot continues to improve and the patient is followed up every 3 months throughout the year.

Is it possible to operate on both feet at the same time?

Yes it is possible, although for the convenience of our patients it is usually performed on consecutive days without any problems.
All our patients return for second foot surgery.

What is not recommended is to leave an interval of more than 1 day between interventions, as this may cause gait dysfunction that could lead to osteoarticular discomfort.

There is talk that the use of this technique may cause bunions to reappear, is this true?

No, the use of this technique is not the cause of its recurrence.

The reason for the recurrence of the bunion, as well as the use of other techniques, depends on the anatomical characteristics of the foot, the surgical procedure performed by the surgeon and finally how the patient has cared for his or her feet.

So far, the medical literature statistics result in 85-90% excellent results with minimally invasive foot surgery.
