Diabetic Foot
It is essential to have a good foot hygiene, but people with diabetic problems have to be especially careful, controlling their sugar (glucose) levels, diet and daily exercise to avoid the development of diabetic foot.
The so-called diabetic foot refers to vascular involvement and neuropathy in patients suffering from diabetes due to deterioration of blood vessels and peripheral nerves.
Possible symptoms of neuropathy in the feet may include:
- Burning when walking
- Cramps
- Pain
- Tingling
- Constant feeling of having the foot asleep
- Absence of reflexes
- Loss or decrease of sensibility
If a person presents these symptoms, it is an indicator that there may be some alteration in blood vessels and/or peripheral nerves.
Diabetic foot and its treatment
Diabetes makes it harder for the body to fight infection and causes less oxygen in the blood to reach the feet.
As a result, skin damage or chafing can develop into a skin ulcer.
Patients with diabetes should visit the podiatrist and/or physician more frequently, even if they do not observe any lesions on their feet, in order to prevent and assess the state of the disease.
At San Roman Clinic we have the equipment and knowledge to treat diabetic feet.
