What is Swift® Microwave Technology Treatment?

At Clínica San Román, we are pioneers in Spain in the implementation of the innovative Swift® microwave technology for the treatment of plantar warts. This non-invasive method offers a safe and effective solution for those suffering from these painful lesions, especially for children, guaranteeing a pain-free experience with fast results.

The Swift® system uses low-intensity microwaves to directly target the human papillomavirus (HPV) responsible for plantar warts. The microwave energy penetrates the affected layers of the skin, heating the tissue and killing the viral cells without damaging the surrounding skin.

Benefits of Swift® Treatment

Non-invasive and painless: Unlike other treatments that can be painful or leave scars, Swift® requires no cuts or needles, and minimal discomfort.
High success rate: Clinical studies have shown a cure rate of up to 83% in just 3-4 sessions, comparable or superior to traditional treatments.
Safe for all ages: Ideal for pediatric patients, it is a safe option even for those with sensitive skin or pre-existing medical conditions.

¿How do microwaves work?

Microwave energy rapidly raises tissue temperature and creates a precise, localized cellular response.

1 – The affected tissue may be several millimeters below the surface and can often be difficult to treat with traditional methods, resulting in untreated tissue or significant damage.

2 – Swift delivers a precise and highly controlled dose of energy. As the microwaves pass through the tissue, the water molecules begin to collide and create localized thermal energy.

3 – Within seconds the treatment is complete and the healing process begins immediately. The treated tissue is quickly replaced, repaired and regenerated.

How is the treatment performed?

The treatment is simple and fast. Each session lasts only a few minutes, during which the Swift® device is applied to the wart. No special post-treatment care is required, and patients can resume their daily activities immediately.

Principal Treatments for Plantar Warts (HPV)

Plantar warts caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can be treated with Swift® microwave therapy, cryotherapy, laser, salicylic acid or minor surgery, depending on the severity and resistance of the lesion.

  • Description: Microwave therapy has shown promising results in the removal of resistant warts caused by HPV. This method allows a direct application of thermal energy through a microwave device, such as the Swift S800, which heats infected tissues, promoting an HPV-specific antiviral immune response.
  • Efficacy: Studies show a 75.9% resolution rate in refractory warts treated with this technique. Pain reduction and lesion resolution are usually significant after the first session.

Principle of Action and Advantages of Microwave Treatment

  • Mechanism: Microwaves induce cutaneous dendritic cell activation and interferon-γ production, stimulating an HPV-specific CD8+ T-cell response. Unlike other thermal treatments such as cryotherapy, this approach allows penetration up to 3 mm without damaging surrounding tissues.
  • Advantages over Other Methods: Microwave therapy is less invasive and avoids the side effects associated with techniques such as cryotherapy and laser therapy, which can cause irritation and dispersion of viral particles. In addition, microwave therapy does not require anesthesia and allows the patient to continue normal activities after treatment.

Long-Term Results and Recommendations

Follow-up Results: In 6-month follow-up studies, treated warts showed no recurrence, and patients reported no pain and improved foot function. The therapy is especially useful in cases where conventional treatments have failed.
