Claw toes and hammer toes

Claw to es is a common pathology in the area of podiatry that requires specific treatments.

These toe deformities are mainly caused by imbalances in the muscular and bony structures of the foot. The affected joints become progressively deformed until they become stiff with dislocation of the joint. The incidence of these deformities increases with age and female sex, becoming up to 5 times more common in females.

Causes of claw and hammer toes

The causes of these deformities include the type of foot, previous trauma, joint diseases, type of footwear and neuromuscular and inflammatory diseases.

Correcting claw toes and hammer toes

Plantar warts caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can be treated with Swift® microwave therapy, cryotherapy, laser, salicylic acid or minor surgery, depending on the severity and resistance of the lesion.

Claw and hammertoes should be treated in time to avoid rigid and permanent deformities. In many cases, the inner part of the shoes rubs against the toe joints producing calluses or bursitis in these areas. In the plantar area of the foot, we find the metatarsal heads that support the weight of almost the entire body, in this area pressure calluses, ulcers and potentially disabling plantar pain develop. When deformities reach this stage, the fingers become stiff, in flexion and unable to be stretched. For this reason, early treatment and prevention of these deformities is important.

At the San Roman Podiatric Clinic we evaluate the degree of deformity and propose the most appropriate treatment for the patient. We use conservative treatment for mild or painful deformities to prevent them from worsening. We also recommend soft shoes with room for the toes and avoid tight-fitting shoes or very high heels. Perform stretching exercises for your fingers. We reserve surgery for cases with significant deformity and pain.

In our center we perform this ambulatory surgery with minimal incision techniques for the correction of claw and hammertoes. These techniques require extensive experience on the part of the surgeon, as well as modern equipment and instrumentation in a center that complies with strict aseptic measures to obtain a satisfactory result. We must highlight the advantages of minimal incision surgery:

  • Ambulatory surgery that allows the patient to walk out on their own feet and without assistance.
  • Local anesthesia minimizes complications compared to other types of anesthesia.
  • A 2 millimeter incision offers a quick recovery with little to no discomfort.
  • It is not necessary to introduce foreign bodies such as needles that other techniques require.
  • Reduced risk of infection and rapid tissue healing.
  • Excellent long-term results.

Treatment of claw toes is essential to prevent permanent deformities and relieve pain. These deformities, caused by muscular and skeletal imbalances can lead to calluses, bursitis and disabling pain. It is crucial to address this condition early with conservative treatments such as stretching exercises and proper footwear. Clínica San Román offers minimally invasive surgery for advanced cases, allowing for a quick and effective recovery. Its team uses modern technology and advanced techniques to ensure optimal results and a better quality of life for patients.
