Everything you need to know about claw toe surgery

What are claw toes and when is surgery necessary?
Claw toes are deformities in which one or more toes are permanently flexed , adopting a curved claw-like position. They are caused by muscle and bone imbalances. Surgery is indicated when the deformity is rigid, causes severe pain, recurrent calluses or significantly limits your daily activity.
Do I have to be admitted to the hospital for surgery?
No. The percutaneous surgery we perform is completely ambulatory. It is performed in our own clinic under local anesthesia in approximately 30 minutes. Once completed, you rest briefly and return home the same day walking, without hospitalization.
Is the operation painful, and what about recovery?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so during the operation you feel no pain. The postoperative period of the percutaneous technique is very bearable: the discomfort is minimal and is perfectly controlled with standard analgesics. Most patients are surprised at how easy the recovery is.
How long does recovery take?
With the minimal incision technique the recovery is much shorter than with traditional surgery. Most patients can walk with special shoes from the next day. In 4-6 weeks they can usually resume their normal activity. The complete follow-up is performed in our clinic.
Can more than one finger be operated on in the same session?
Yes, in many cases it is possible to correct several toes in the same intervention and even combine claw toe surgery with the correction of a bunion. It depends on the individual assessment of each patient. In the free consultation our specialists will evaluate your specific case and recommend the most efficient option for you.
When will I be able to walk and work normally again?
You will be able to walk from the first day with post-surgical footwear. If your job is sedentary, many patients return to work in 5-7 days. For jobs that require prolonged standing or physical exertion, the period may be somewhat longer. Your recovery plan will be defined on a case-by-case basis.
Is the correction of claw toes definitive?
Yes, percutaneous surgery corrects the deformity structurally and permanently, realigning the bones and tendons. By following the postoperative recommendations on footwear and stretching exercises, the result is maintained in the long term. It is important to act before the deformity becomes completely rigid.
