Het treft voornamelijk de <strong>grote teen<\/strong> (eerste teen) en is een van de meest voorkomende podologische aandoeningen: naar schatting komt het voor bij <strong>2,5-5% van de algemene bevolking<\/strong> en het komt vooral veel voor bij adolescenten en jonge volwassenen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het proces begint meestal met <strong>druk van de nagelrand<\/strong> op de huid. Zonder behandeling verloopt het in drie klassieke stadia (classificatie van Heifetz): van lichte ontsteking (stadium I) tot infectie met een pyogeen granuloom en misvorming van de nagelplooi (stadium III). In dit stadium is conservatieve behandeling zelden effectief en is een operatie nodig om het probleem definitief op te lossen.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wat veel mensen niet weten, is dat <strong>het thuis knippen van de punt van de nagel het probleem alleen maar verergert<\/strong>.
