They can affect a single toe or several toes at once, and are the most common forefoot deformities after bunions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference between them is the joint involved:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hammer toes:<\/strong> The toe bends only at the <em>proximal interphalangeal<\/em> joint. The toe resembles an &#8220;inverted V.&#8221; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Claw toes:<\/strong> <strong>both<\/strong> interphalangeal <strong>joints<\/strong> (proximal and distal) are flexed. The finger is completely curled inward. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mal<\/strong> let toe: only the <em>distal interphalangeal<\/em> joint\u2014the one closest to the toenail\u2014bends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the friction between the bent area and the shoe causes <strong>calluses, helomas (hard calluses), and pain when walking<\/strong>. The deformity starts out flexible\u2014it can be straightened by hand\u2014and progresses until it becomes <strong>rigid<\/strong>, with dislocation of the metatarsophalangeal joint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who does this affect?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are common deformities: their prevalence increases with age, and they are <strong>up to five times more common in women<\/strong> than in men. The deformity of the big toe (hallux valgus) pushes against the other toes, causing them to become misaligned. If only the bunion is treated without correcting the misalignment of the other toes, the aesthetic and functional results will be incomplete.
